Can you use a joystick as a 3D mouse in programs such as Solidworks, Revit, Autocad and others?

I'm a college student and a 3D mouse is expensive and hard to justify right now, but I could swing money for a joystick. That's why I'm wondering since both of them work on the same number of axis and also have programmable functions can you plug in a joystick and use it as a 3D mouse or will these drafting programs not recognize it.
