Catholics: Is it as improper to judge a person for his good qualities as it is to judge someone for bad?

I am interested in getting the Catholic's point of view on judging. Is it as wrong to judge a person who is good as it is to judge one who behaves in a bad or sinful manner? Jesus said we are not to judge because we ourselves will be judged according to the same judgment that we use to judge others. But He also said we will know a tree by the fruit it bears. What is the Church's take on this issue?
