Why do religious people think their choice should be protected , yet gays be discriminated against for theirs?

It's evidence of the inherent chauvinism and dogmatic bigotry of many of the world's religions. It is not always the case, though. Look at the Unitarian Universalists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, etc.
